Getting ready for the first visit

You don't need to prepare much, and nothing has to be perfect. A little thought beforehand helps your coordinator write a plan that fits.

Before your coordinator comes

  • Think about what a good day looks like for you, and what a bad one looks like.
  • Jot down what's getting harder, and what you still enjoy doing yourself.
  • Think about who you'd like: shared interests, language, the kind of personality you'd warm to, and the days and times that suit.
  • Decide who, if anyone, you'd like to sit in. You'll be asked directly either way.
  • Have your GP's details, your emergency contact and any allergies handy.

Getting the home ready

  • How a companion gets in: you at the door, a key safe, or a spare key with someone you trust.
  • Where things are kept: the kettle and tea, cleaning things, the washing basket.
  • Anything worth mentioning: steps, the dog, a tricky lock, a gate that sticks.
  • A clear, reasonably safe space to move around in.
  • A phone number where we can reach you, and an emergency contact.

Recording devices

If there are cameras or other recording devices in the home, tell us before the visit.

An "all about me" page

A single page helps whoever steps in. It doesn't need to be neat. Your coordinator will help you fill in the gaps.

  • What you like to be called.
  • Your favourite things: music, programs, food, places.
  • Your daily routine, and the parts you'd like left alone.
  • Things to avoid, from a topic to a brand of tea.
  • What helps on a bad day.

A few things we ask of everyone

  • Keep your health information, allergies, emergency contact and GP up to date.
  • Treat companions with respect.
  • Please don't offer companions money, gifts, loans or work. They aren't allowed to accept them.

Don't tidy for us

Your companion is there to help, not to inspect. And the first plan is provisional, so it's fine if it takes a visit or two to get things right.
